When we sold our home of six years in Texas to move to Arizona for a great new job, we were thrilled at the amount of equity that had built up. It was, to us, a lot of money. But it was only “Monopoly Money” because, however much it was we’d never see it, because we were resigned to the fact that we’d have to put it all into a big down payment on our new Arizona home. Because that is what we’d been taught to do. When Ruby Mason first suggested we could make just a 10% down payment on our new home and keep the majority of the equity to invest as we saw fit, it sounded like one of those infomercials — way to good to be true. Then when Ruby showed us other home financing options, we were very skeptical. It all ran counter to the way we always thought about home financing. We had our own financial planner help us run the numbers and we were amazed that we could afford a great home and still have a sizable pool of money to invest in our future. We felt so smart!
